The path
Becoming a financial adviser in New Zealand
Get qualified
Advisers need the competence set out in the Code of Professional Conduct for Financial Advice Services. The usual way to show it is the New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5), with a strand for the advice you'll give, such as Residential Property Lending for home loan advice.
Advise for a licensed provider
Regulated financial advice is given by, or on behalf of, a licensed financial advice provider. Mutual Trust Financial Services Limited holds a Financial Advice Provider licence issued by the FMA.
Register
Financial advisers register on the Financial Service Providers Register and confirm their registration each year.
Keep learning
Each year, advisers plan and complete learning that keeps their skills and knowledge up to date.
General information only: the requirements can change. Sources: Financial Markets Authority: financial advisers and NZQA: New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5).
